More from the Lift-off

After all of the balloons had gone from the field they had a skydiver exhibition. Several of them were women. I believe they were from the Air Force Academy. They did a great job of showing off their talents.

Below are two images showing them coming in to the target area for their landing.

I soon learned taking a video of moving object is directly over your head is hard. Makes one’s neck ache and can cause dizziness. Below is my attempt.

We truly enjoyed our morning at the Labor Day lift off in Colorado Springs!

More balloons

Here are some additional images and videos from our visit to the Labor Day Lift-off in Colorado Springs. While this balloon festival is not as large as the one in Albuquerque it was certainly excellent!

While to the observer it appears to be total chaos each balloon pilot has been issued flight instructions as to when to take off. It was very nice for the spectators that there were over 60 balloons. This required two flights or lift offs as there was only about 30 acres for the balloons to launch from.

Who says pigs can’t fly?

And one of the most unusual was this presentation of “the old woman in the shoe”.

The lift off has begun.

Labor day Lift Off

We got up at 3 AM today so we could attend the Labor Day Lift Off of 2016 in Colorado Springs, Colorado. They announced that they had over 60 balloons in attendance. And there must’ve been close to 50,000 people here also. It was very enjoyable and Marilyn even got to share with one of her friends back in Missouri via FaceTime.

While there may have been Roadtreks in some of the other parking lots ours had a front row seat!

This is the lead balloon which will be chased by the other balloons. It is the red one and it will drop a target somewhere along its path, then those chasing it will try to hit the target with their markers.

Here you can see some of the chase balloons being inflated and a small portion of the many, many people in attendance.

Being here and able to get the parking spot that we did made it a lot of fun. We were able to relax in our Roadtrek and get out when we wanted to do so. Colorado Springs has been the location of this event for 40 years. Well worth the effort to attend!

Yesterday and today

Yesterday after loafing a little while at our campsite we drove down to Copper Mountain resort area as there is a Starbucks there. After that we drove west just a little ways on Interstate 70 to Highway 24, one of the scenic byway’s in Colorado. From there we headed up the mountain toward Leadville.

Below are a few of the images we want to share with you.

Below is Geraldine III sitting about two thirds of the way up the mountain. It was a very pretty drive and one we enjoyed very much.

Fall is near

We noticed today that the fireweed has bloomed to the very end of the stalk. In Alaska they say this indicates that fall is over and winter is near.

Another indicator is the aspen leaves beginning to change to their fall golden color. There are a couple of images below which indicate that this is beginning to happen.

Perhaps another indicator of winter approaching is the return of some migratory waterfowl. Below are a couple of images of a few ducks resting.

Our stay in Colorado is nearing its end. We are hoping by late next week we will be headed home. First though we will be going to Colorado Springs, Colorado to hopefully be able to share with you some images of the balloon fiesta they are having over Labor Day weekend.

Railroad

We happened to be in Leadville today and decided to have lunch by the railroad depot in the off chance that the train might depart or arrive while we were there. We were about halfway through with lunch and the train returned to the depot. The website for the train is well done and is located at leadville-train.com and they offer many different combinations of train rides during the spring, summer and fall.

At the depot they have an old railroad steam engine with a coal tender on display.

The image below is of the informational sign posted on the tender.

It appears that back in the early 1900s railroad engines had to clear their own snow. Evidenced by the massive snowplow on the front of the old steam engine.

Below we are hoping you will find a video of the Leadville Colorado and Southern train returning to the depot after it’s 2 1/2 our trip up the mountain and back.

Yesterday, August 25th

Yesterday we drove into Frisco, Colorado. While doing so we used our dash cam to record some of the Colorado scenery. The reason for our trip in to Frisco was to do a little shopping and take Mittens back to the Frisco animal hospital for his biweekly infusion. We had utilized this clinic when we were here last year and Mittens got sick. As happened last year they did a excellent job and we were promptly back on our way to our campground near Leadville.

Below is a video clip of some of the Colorado scenery which is beginning to look a little like fall. We are hoping before we head back home sometime in September that the aspen leaves will change to golden.

Western highway driving

While we are still around Leadville, Colorado and it is nice and cool, we also have time to go through some of the videos that our dash cam recorded.

Below is a one minute video which will give you some idea of what it is like to drive the western USA highways. The unusual part of this video is that another vehicle passed us.  Contrary to popular believe I am not always the fastest vehicle on the highway.       😎

Video of Twin Falls

Below we have posted a short video of the Shoshone falls near Twin Falls, Idaho.

We were able to post this due to being able to connect to the Wi-Fi at the public library in Leadville, Colorado. Sorry we were so many days in getting it done but we have been “off the grid”,

We are currently enjoying very cool weather in Leadville, Colorado.

Off the Grid

Sorry we haven’t been able to post more. We have been off for a day or two or three or four.

Below is a short, quick video of what is called the Collegiate Peaks. These three tall peaks are named after Princeton, Yale and Harvard.
