a short video

Yesterday on our drive down to Valdez we stopped to view some waterfalls. This short video is of Horsetail Falls. The sound is of the waterfall and the wind.
We hope you enjoy.

Change

Change of plans. We are now in Valdez. We decided to postpone our visit to Wrangell – St. Elias for a few days in the hopes it would quit raining and the clouds might at least rise enough that we could see the mountain tops.

Of course it is raining here in Valdez. We do however have a cell signal so we can send out some images and maybe post a video on Facebook.

After we headed east on AK 1 out of Palmer yesterday we found several very scenic vistas. This is one where there was a pull off. 🙂

From Soldotna

We will be leaving Soldotna today after a day of resting, defrosting the refrigerator and visiting a bit with an Internet friend from 1991. We first met face 2 face in 2011. He is a great friend.

Today we will be heading to Wrangell–St. Elias National Park and Preserve. It is a United States national park and national preserve managed by the National Park Service. We are hoping to see some new sights and be able to get some images to share. Not sure when as we have no idea how good cell coverage is in that area.

Have a great day!

Departed Denali

We left Donalli national Park and preserve this morning. On our way down to Wasilla we saw these unusual flowers. They are not the usual Fireweed that one sees everywhere.

We hope you

We hope you enjoy this video of a portion of the demonstration of the Alaskan Husky sled dogs. They are the primary mode of transportation in Denali National Park and Preserve during the winter. They are raised on site and can handle temperatures as low as -40 degrees. brrrrr, too cold for me!

As the video of the ranges hooking the dogs to the sled was a very large file I have posted it to Facebook. Below is the link to the video, I hope you enjoy it.

sled dogs

Yesterday we went to the dog sled demonstration. The park service raises the dogs from pups and retire them when they are nine years old. They then put them up for adoption, only to folks that live in colder climates. Each dog has its own space and ‘dog house”. I will try to post a video later on our blog.

Here you see the dogs and their houses, Some are up barking to try to be one of those selected for the demonstration. In the foreground is the sled they will be hooked to for the demo. It has no wheels so the dogs get a real workout.

Here is a close up of one of the dogs. They are Alaskan Huskies and are bred for stamina and certain other physical attributes.

Another close-up, this one showing more of the harness the dogs were when hooked to the sled.
