Palmer

Sorry, no photos today. Overcast and occasional sprinkles, not conducive for photography.

We drove quite a few miles today, 358 to be exact. From Chicken to Palmer, AK. the last 150 miles was the prettiest, just not enough light to do it justice. And the mountain tops were in the clouds. We intend to come back to this area and spend some time.

A very long day

But not a long way. We left Whitehorse about 8:30 AM this morning and finally arrived in Chicken, Alaska about 8:00 PM tonight. There is no cell tower for many miles so this won’t be sent until Wednesday. Most of the roads we traveled were gravel and we did not spend much time taking photos. Lots of the time we were only able to do about 25 MPH without jarring our teeth out. We might have traveled 300 miles. Most was in Canada.

We did get a brief respite after checking in with US Customs as a whole 13 miles of newly paved road started there. Nice but brief and the rest of the way to Chicken was as bad as some of the worst Canadian highways.

We can now say we have traveled the “Top of the World Highway”. The views were impressive as you may be able to make out in some of the images I will post in this emai and the next one. Traveling the ridge/mountaintops one could see almost forever. The only impediment was smoke in the air from a forest fire somewhere west in Alaska.

Town of Dawson City where we got the ferry across the Yukon River.

View from the ferry of the Yukon River.

Below are just two of the magnificent vistas to be seen along the “Top of the World Highway”.

A little history

These images are from our return trip from Skagway to Whitehorse on Monday.

Below are two of the roadside information displays with a short history lesson.

This image is of one of the prettier vistas we saw. The drive to Skagway was very nice!

We hope you are enjoying our bog of our travels.

Two more

Two more examples of many of the views from the “Top of the World Highway”. We started on the North Klondike Highway near Whitehorse, then the “Top of the World Highway” began at Dawson City, Canada. It runs for about 80 miles and the first 13 in the US are brand new and very nice. In almost 12 hours of driving we only covered 445 miles. I can assure you it felt like many more. We did take a short break for lunch. We were not delayed any for my coffee as there was not a Starbucks to be found. LOL

One can see for miles and miles!

An example of the road, and this was one of the better sections.

Road to Skagway

One of the many lakes, some that have an emerald cast to the water.

Another lake, this one with a reflection of the many mountains that still have snow.

A small bit of some of the almost barren landscape as one is coming up the Hiway

More mountains with snow. About 58 degrees here.

One of the few pull outs along the road. A bus beat us to this one! 🙂

Hope you enjoyed this post.

Cassiar highway

After about three days (seems much longer) we are finally off of the Cassiar highway and now in Watson Lake, Yukon, Canada. They may have to rename Cassiar to Power Line highway as for many miles of it they are putting a very high capacity power line. 🙂

This is the glacier just a few miles from Stewart, BC.

These waterfalls and cascades are also close to Stewart.

A few

Here are a few images from our trip up the Sea to sky Highway. There are several lakes along the way. And also many streams, creeks and rivers. These are just a sample of the beauty that we saw today it would be even prettier if it were not for the forest fires creating all the smoke that you see you in a few of the photos.

Sorry, no captions on these today.
