This morning we left the Kootenai River Campground near Troy, Montana to head out to do a little exploring. We headed west on US Highway two and then turned north on Montana 508. This was a somewhat hilly and curvy road that led us to Yaak, Montana. Almost every mile goes a long way Yaak river. Before reaching Yaak we pass the Yaak Riverfalls. With the snow melt the river was running very well. The image and video below should give you a good idea of what it was like.

Hopefully you will be able to view and enjoyed the video of the falls below.

After passing through the town of Yaak we continued on toward Rexford, Montana. While I had thought that the road coming this far was crooked and hilly it was nothing compared to what we experienced the rest of the way to the Koocanusa lake. Fortunately there was a nice pull off near the bridge across the Koocanusa where we stopped for a late lunch. Below is a photograph of the bridge and the Koocanusa Lake. The lake is many miles long and even stretches into Canada.

We have now returned to Kalispell hoping that the cable the Roadtrek dealer here in town needs to reprogram our VoltStart will have arrived in time for our appointment on Wednesday.

We hope you are enjoying our blog and invite your comments.

Yesterday

Yesterday we traveled off the beaten track. We visited the Ross Creek Giant Cedars. This area is a few miles of scenic and curvy road off of Montana highway 56.

Being from Missouri and accustomed to seeing an occasional Cedartree 30 or 40 foot tall these were amazing. Many were over 100 feet tall or you can see in the photos below. These giant cedars are huge!

Below is an image of the foliage of a giant cedar. It is different than our cedars in the Ozarks.

Chewing Blackbones campground.

We are a tending a Roadtrek gathering at the chewing blackbones campground near the Glacier National Park. There are about 30 road tracks and 50 or 60 people having a great time. Yan Seiner and Mike Wendland did another outstanding job of putting this together.

Below is an image of part of the view from our campsite.

This morning we took a drive up the Many Glaciers road. A very scenic drive and later in the morning very windy. Below are a few of the images we got wild doing the drive and using some of the pull outs.

More information about glacier national Park

Snyder Creek, running full with snowmelt, runs next to the lodge and into Lake McDonald. The creek was named after George Snyder. The lodge site was established in 1895 when George Snyder homesteaded the land and built a small Snyder hotel.

With a mostly sunny day the lake is beautiful, and many people were about to embark on a boat tour of Lake McDonald now. Others choose to ride the park buses. These take visitors to several areas of the park.

It’s a gorgeous day for a boat ride. Visitors to the park we’re lining up to get on the boat.

This is one of the buses use for transportation in the park. I believe it is an old Packard.

These two images show the Clearwater of the lake in the multicolored stones near the shore. A few of the trees seem to have moss “beard’s” growing on the trunks.

I have seen a lot of moss growing on trees, never before anything like this.

Lake McDonald, Glacier National Park

The sad news is that Going to the Sun road is closed today. The good news is that we enjoyed visiting the lodge on Lake McDonald. The lodge was celebrating its 103rd birthday today. Unfortunately there was no free cake! 🤠

Below is a photograph of the front of the lodge which faces the lake. When it was built it was only accessible by boat. There is an additional image of the chandelier in the main lobby of the lodge. Very unique.

The lampshades on the chandelier were originally crafted in 1927 by members of the Blood Indian tribe for the Prince of Wales hotel in Waterton park, Alberta, Canada. The shades, depicting stories from the lives of Indians in the early 1900s, were moved to the lake McDonald Lodge in 1960. In 1982, a local Montana artist was commissioned to reproduce the shades using the original frameworks.

Glacier national Park

Just barely got inside the entrance to the park and had a photo opportunity. Below you will see an image of a plant called Beargrass. Quite a lot of them blooming alongside the highway.

Update from Bozeman, Montana

We have had an interesting few days since I last posted. From Scotts Bluff, Nebraska we traveled on north west into Dubois, Wyoming. The Wind river was raging with the snowmelt. We saw one farmstead that was flooded out and when we tried to obtain a campground in Du Bois they were both flooded out. We traveled on up toward Jackson, Wyoming and found a campground, Lava Mountain Campground. Fastest Wi-Fi we have ever had in a campground.

Below is a photo from Marilyn’s kitchen window of the view from the campsite.

After spending the night we headed down toward Jackson, Wyoming where I knew there was a Starbucks. This section of highway features some amazing views. The one below is of the grand Tetons from a pull out along this section of highway.

As it was somewhat early in the day after getting my Starbucks in Jackson we decided to head on North. Of course one of the most scenic spots along that route of which there are many is at Oxbow Bend on the Snake River. Below is an image we got there while we were having lunch.  This one was also from Marilyn’s kitchen window. Part of the fascination of this scene is the portion of the Grand Teton mountains that you can see from there. It is a very popular stop for photographers and tourists.

Additional photos from Scotts Bluff national monument

Below are three images of the plaques on display outside at the monument. The images may be enlarged by clicking on them.

All three of these images commemorate the pony express service which came through Scotts Bluff.

The very small print in the upper right of the image says ” 120 celebrated riders rode 650,000 miles with only one rider to be killed by Indians, only one schedule not completed and one mail pouch lost”. The pony express route was from St. Joseph, Missouri to Sacramento, California.
