Seward, AK yesterday

We were in Seward yesterday most of the day and spent the night there in the city campground on Resurrection Bay. This was one of the very few moments when it was not raining or so foggy one could not see 100 feet. We left there this morning after and hour or two of much the same weather.

We are now in Soldotna at our favorite Fred Meyer. We did get a few images on the way here and i will get them out in another email.

Ressurection Bay at Seward, AK. Two large cruise ships were docked. A very pretty location when it is not so foggy one can not see boats in the bay.

On the way back from Kennecott

While driving back to civilization from Kennecott we were pleased to see a few pairs of Trumpeter Swans. Below is one pair with some cygnets.

A pair of trumpeter swans with five cygnets. It was great to see them having such a large brood.

How is this for a beautiful place to call your summer home and raise your brood.

Back on the grid

After spending a few days traveling and exploring more of Alaska we are finally “back on the grid”. We are in Palmer, AK at a Carr’s Grocery, part of the Safeway group. A very nice store and the big bonus is it has a Starbucks! I have already had my Vente decaff Mocha Raspberry, skim milk, no whipped cream and they did such a good job I believe I will get another before we leave. Unfortunately their Wi-Fi was not working, at least for me. 🙂

Now, on to a few images in this email to be followed with more emails with images.

A view of Kennecott from a distance. Gives one an idea of the size of the copper mill and what an enormous undertaking it was to build all of this at the turn of the 20th Century. First they had to build a railway and then transport most everything in for construction and living essentials. It was an overcast day which makes it appear a bit foggy.

A closer view that helps show the enormity of the Kennecott Copper Mill.

This is one of the building in Kennecott that was damaged in a flood in 2006. The Park Service and some partners are rebuilding much of Kennecott, It was an interesting and educational visit for us. The 60 miles of gravel road to get there was not as pleasurable.

Just before

Just before we left to go to Kennecott while we were still near Valdez we finally got some images of a sea otter. He was about 350 yards away, we could not entice him any closer. 🙂

The sea otter seems to be enjoying its lunch and paying no attention to the gull nearby. I imagine the gull is hoping there will be some leftovers?

The same sea otter with its catch for lunch. Again a long ways away. 😦

A couple more from Kennecott

To hopefully finish getting somewhat cought up with keeping all of you up to date on our travels here are two more.

At the General Store in Kennecott they had these old utensils on display.

This is the face of Root Glacier, near Kennecott. One of the largest or deepest glaciers in Alaska. HUGE!

Alaska

Late this afternoon we were able to obtain a few images we feel are representative of summer in Alaska.

Fireweed almost blooming to the top. We have heard that this signals the end of summer. This also shows that in August they have very cloudy skies.

A bumblebee doing its job of gathering pollen and then spreading it around to other plants.

A view to the east from Valdez. Fireweed, lakes, spruce trees and snow on the mountains.

Many Alaskans

For many Alaskans a seaplane is their favorite mode of transportation. Below is one in flight and below that shows two which are parked by their homes.

Valdez

Had a great time today across the bay from Valdez near the Solomon Fish Hatchery. We were there during high tide along with what seemed to be thousands of salmon, a few Steller Sea Lions and many gulls.

This Steller Sea Lion having success at getting a nice meal.

A large salmon with its head above water among other salmon.

Another Steller Sea Lion cruising for fish.
