Mount Denali

This morning early we headed out on the park road at Denali National Park and Preserve. The beavers were not working in the pond so we went on to view Denali, what the locals call Mt. McKinley. It is the highest mountain on the North American continent.

When we arrived at one of the viewing locations below is all that we could see. Just part of the base of the mountain.

Figuring that this was going to be another of the days when Mt, McKinley remained shrouded in clouds we drove back to the beaver pond. Those “busy beavers” were still sleeping in. We went on down to the sled dog demonstration. After it was over we went back up to the beaver pond and they were still not working. So, we drove on to the Denali view point and lo and behold, there it was in all its glory. When one realizes that the mountain is more than 60 miles away the magnitude of it overwhelms one.

Not more than 30 minutes after our first view of Mt. McKinley it started “making its own weather” and was beginning to cloud over. Here the south peak is already obscured by the forming clouds.

We hope you enjoy these views of Denali. They say that only 30% of the park visitors get to view Mt. McKinley.

Denali National Park and Preserve

We had a very nice morning today. Drove back and forth some on the publicly accessible park road. Also visited the sled dogs and viewed the dog exhibition. Those images later.

Our first trip out to where Mt. McKinley can be viewed it was mostly clouded in.

About two hours later Denali as the natives call it was in full view, magnificent!

The image below was taken with a telephoto lens.
This is a closer view. From this viewpoint it is about 70 miles away.

Caribou from Denali

One variety of wildlife which seems to be plentiful in Denali are the caribou. We were fortunate to be able to see a few of the older bulls and many females during our bus ride. The tide to Eielson and back took about 8 hours. Although the scenery can be very pretty on a nice day when it is raining the wildlife is the most enjoyable part of the ride.

One of the large caribou bulls we got to see.

A small herd of caribou on one of the mountainsides.

Another very large bull caribou. As you can see his antlers are quite large. It appears he is stripping breakfast from a small tree.
Evidently he is one the rangers are tracking as he is wearing a GPS locator around his neck.

Bears

We were fortunate in being able to see several grizzly bears on our bus ride. A few were even fairly close to the Denali park road.

A pair of grizzly youngsters, maybe two years old, scurrying down a hillside.

This appears to be an adult and it appeared to have an itch it was scratching off on the small tree.

This large adult grizzly was quite a ways from the road. It appears it has some more shedding to do.

on a rainy

Yesterday on a rainy day we rode the bus in Denali National Park and Preserve to Eielson and back. It was nice and cool. We got on the bus at 6 AM and our hopes of seeing wildlife by catching the earliest bus was rewarded.

A male ptarmigan. These birds are a bit hard to catch standing still it seems as they are always scurrying somewhere.

Another ptarmigan.

Beaver

I felt it fitting to pass along these images of a beaver working hard. We too have been busy as a beaver, enjoying the part of the park road we are allowed to drive.

Taking a small piece of wood, we suppose to his home.

Appears to taking home some victuals to store for the winter.

A few more Denali

While on the Parks Highway we did our best to take advantage of every opportunity to get another image of Mt. McKinley (Denali).

The two images below were from a roadside parking area. Not even marked as a photo stop.

Denali mountain

As we were traveling north today from Wassila to Denali National Park we had the opportunity along the way to get a few photos of Mount McKinley, known by the locals as Denali. As you can tell it was a very beautiful day in Alaska!

These three images are from the Denali State Park Viewpoint South.

This image includes the guide with the names of the various mountains that are visible.
