A brief visit to the museums Discovery Laboratory

We were very fortunate to be standing near the door as a small group of people were invited into the Discovery Laboratory

It was quite fascinating to see several of the items they had assembled and others they were working on. They do an excellent job and make their subjects very lifelike.

This sign probably indicates the work they produce appears in all of the museums at the Buffalo Bill Museums of the West.

The video below is a short presentation of the area where the work is accomplished. We truly appreciated this insight into all the work that goes into preparing items for display.

Another exhibit which appeared to be ready to move to its display area is below.

An evening at the Cody Cattle Company

Last night we joined my wife’s nephew and his wife for their anniversary at the Cody Cattle Company. It was our first visit there and we were very happy with the accommodations, the buffet meal, and the entertainment by The Triple C Cowboys band.

All three of the members of the band have won numerous awards around the country. The variety of music they played range from old Gene Autry and other old time movie stars and musicians to more modern varieties. The song they played that was my favorite was Ghost Riders in the Sky. Below is the graphic from the screen which was there while they were playing it.

Below is a short clip from that song.

Should you be in or near Cody, Wyoming be sure to visit the Cody Cattle Company. In addition to a great meal we had a very entertaining evening.

Another visit to Buffalo Bill Museum of the West

This morning we visited the Draper Museum of Natural History. Below is an image of the entry and another which explains the museum. This Museum is on several different levels, all wheelchair accessible.

While this museum is full of excellent exhibits the one below was my favorite. Two mountain goats, a big horn ram and lots of interesting information.

Two other inhabitants of the higher elevation are below:

Other exhibits included wildlife and birds.

And some hunting weapons.

A day off

We decided today to take a day off from visiting the Buffalo Bill Center of the West. Instead we drove around to some areas we had not seen before and ended up on a country road where we found some photo opportunities.

We enjoyed a more leisurely day for a change. And we hope you will enjoy the images we present below.

We found an area of wildflowers blooming and share them with you here:

While we were out exploring it was fun to watch the shadows of the clouds dance around on the hills and mountains. Below is our attempt to share this with you although a still image does not do it justice.

Another Visit to the Buffalo Bill Center of the West Musems

Yesterday we viewed the Buffalo Bill Museum, a remarkable concentration of memorabilia from the life of a remarkable man. This statue greets all who visit.

Perhaps one item in the collection which many are unaware of is the Congressional Medal of Honor given to Mr. Cody.

Another exhibit we thought unusual was this depiction of Buffalo Bill dressed as a business man.

Below is an image of what was perhaps a poster or banner announcing Buffalo Bill’s visit to the queen of England.

There was also a large banner depicting Buffalo Bill’s performance before the Queen of England. There are also maps with little red pins showing everywhere he performed in North America and Europe.

Below are a few of the exhibits in Buffalo Bill Museum.

In addition to the many displays of Buffalo Bill’s possessions there are several items which belonged to others in his shows. Below are a few items belonging to Annie Oakley.

Another few exhibits are of a short term member of the show, William F. (Doc) Carver. In the photograph of the saddle the strange looking ornaments are Silver dollars with bullet holes in them which we assume were used we during the shows for a display of marksmanship.

In 1968 Winchester produced a commerative rifle and in 1969 a commemorative trowel was presented after the laying of the cornerstone. They are on display also.

we hope you enjoyed this presentation of some of the exhibits at the Buffalo Bill Museum portion of the Buffalo Bill Center of the West.

Outdoor Bronzes

We visited the Cody Museum again today. Below are some of the bronze statues located in various locations on the grounds of the museum.

One which is very popular is the one of Sacajawea, the Indian which assisted Lewis and Clark on their exploration of the west.

There are many other statues, large and small. The first one is very small, making it hard to see the birds on the bisons back and the prairie dogs and other small animals.

We have certainly enjoyed our visits to the Buffalo Bill Center of the West.

Buffalo Bill Center of the West, Cody, Wyoming

A wonderful place to spend some time while one is in Cody, Wyoming. This 7 acres under one roof of museums is affiliated with the Smithsonian and has a lot of wonderful displays and information.

The five museums are Buffalo Bill Museum, Cody firearms museum, Draper natural history Museum, Plains Indian museum and the Whitney western art museum. Fortunately a ticket allows entry for two days. The number and quality of exhibits is overwhelming! Several examples of the many bronze’s are below and there are several outside:

We first visited the Cody firearms museum which unfortunately has part of it closed off for construction. Even so there is a multitude of firearms on display. Below are images of a small portion of them:

How some of the firearm collection came to Cody and the firearms museum.

We also visited the Whitney Western Art Museum.

Hopefully we can return tomorrow to see more of the museums and outdoor attractions.
